this will change your world (or weekend)

Who loves a good garage sale? Okay now who loves a good estate sale? Or how about 20+ at your fingertips? Oh good I have your attention now! One of my co-workers actually turned me on to this estate sale mecca (if you will?) and I don’t know if I will ever aimlessly drive around in search of one again!

It’s called EstateSale.net and it’s kind of like Garage Sale Mapper, but BETTER because it’s overflowing with pictures of every item for sale. Winner. And guess what? It’s for all of the US and Canada! Woo!

You can either click on your state, or type in your zip code and you’ll be given a huge list of estate/tag sales in your area! My results are smaller because I’ve eliminated things I’m not interested in like auctions, appointment only sales, etc.

There will be a fun interactive map where you can click each pin to find out more information about that particular sale, or you can use the list below (which I prefer) that has even more information.

Once you find a sale you like you can click on the link and learn every possible detail you could ever want to know about that estate sale. Dates, times, what they’re selling, what kind of money they accept, things they’re selling, etc. And most all of them are brimming with high quality images of everything they’re selling. Think pinterest, but for estate sales! And you can click each photo to blow it up.

I think we all know I’m dying for that chevron wingback chair! I’m kind of sad I’ll be out of town this weekend because I’ve been hunting for a great china cabinet for a while, and several of the sales I came across had a great selection. You can also subscribe to their email list to be alerted each week about upcoming sales in your area! You bet your button’s I’m already on that list :)

Gone are the days of driving around hoping and praying you see that special sign that reads ESTATE SALE HERE. Did you guys already know about this or have I been living under a rock? :)

SPOTTED: ceramic animals on the loose!

Animals have always played a huge roll in home decor. Whether it be your claw foot tub, your horse head bookends, or your gryphon pedestal table, they’re everywhere.

Even though I’m a huge animal lover, you’d never catch me dead with kitten posters or froggy figurines. I try to incorporate my love of animals in a more subtle way and with a bit of whimsy. Enter: my love of ceramic animals. They’re starting to spring up in home decor all over the place.

So since we’re all friends here, and this is a safe place, I wanted to share with you my disgusting addiction to ceramic animals and faux animals in general.

That’s right, another rhino.. I just can’t get enough! This butter dish was such a steal at Pier1. He was originally $15 and when I got to the register he rang up for $3! These bird salt and pepper shakers were also a Pier1 find over a year ago. I love how that add some fun to my dining room tablescape.

These two were both impulse buys at Home Goods. The dragon makes a really quirky bookend, and you may even remember seeing him in my old apartment. The Greyhound guard dog is a new addition to the ceramic animal kingdom. You may remember him making an appearance in our Christmas tree crashing post, sporting a festive bow around his neck.

There are even ceramic animals in the kitchen. The fish dip caddy was another great Pier1 steal. It was also marked down to $3. My little cow creamer was a fun find in Traverse City, MI a few summers ago. I’ve probably used him for actual creamer twice, I just think he looks fun on top of my stove.

Please tell me I’m not the only one out there obsessed with ceramic animals! Derek thinks it’s the most ridiculous thing ever. Maybe we can form a support group?

SPOTTED: chevron, not just an oil company

Chevron patterns have been found throughout history, in ancient architecture, textiles, and even flooring.

This classic pattern has been making a huge comeback in the field of design. This time with more of a modern twist. Remember when I incorporated it in my throw pillows and wall art? I love how modern, geomoetric, and BOLD it is. It really does just add that punch of color and pattern to really make a space. Check out how all of these interiors and products have incorporated chevron into their designs.

Pretty slick right? I’m obsessed. Because it is such a statement pattern, you don’t want to do a chevron overkill, but in small doses throughout your home it can work really well.

SPOTTED: mid-century furniture at.. kmart?

Mid-century furniture has been popular with design enthusiasts since, well.. the middle of the 20th century. Charles and Ray Eames, Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier are design masters. They study the human form and can design a chair like no other. Their designs have stood the test of time, and continue to be reproduced and sold to the masses at a very hefty price.

Companies have been replicating these pieces for years, but a true admirer knows the difference. I’m always out to get a bargain, but trust me if I had endless amounts of cash you bet I’d be forking it over for the real deals. I mean nothing beats perfection handcrafted by the masters, but until that day comes I’m all about the replicas as long as they’re REALLY accurate, which surprisingly Kmart did a pretty great job!

The correct answer is: all of the above. Can you believe it? I was certainly shocked when I discovered Kmart’s new line, Baxton Studio, where they’ve done a pretty good job at keeping up with the details of the iconic pieces found at DWR. I’ve seen my fare share of replica Eames chairs and Eileen Gray tables on Amazon and crazy Chinese factory websites, but they’re either way too expensive or poorly constructed. Never on earth did I expect to see these beauties at the quickly disappearing Kmart! Seriously, have you seen a Kmart lately?  After finding a white Eames rocker I’ve been drooling over my whole life, I googled the nearest Kmart thinking it was right down the road. Negative. There are zero in SA anymore and only about 10 left in Texas. Sad day.

I’m the kind of person that can order anything online IF I’ve seen it in person first. So I dug a little deeper and here’s some trivia: Kmart and Sears carry the same exact things [they're pretty much twins], so I went down to the only Sears I know of here and guess what? Nothing. They’re furniture department was lacking big time. So back to drooling over the online images. But I mean really, they’re pretty close to the real deal so I may just go for it. Below I’ve matched up the real deals with the fakes so you could see for yourself. Obviously blue = real, yellow = fake, and the links are to the Baxton Studio pieces.
