chalk it up

October 18 2012

Every fall San Antonio has an event called Chalk it Up hosted by Artpace, where artists and groups join together to create beautiful masterpieces using.. you guessed it, chalk! This the first year that Derek and I went together and we were a little nervous about the turn out because it had been threatening to rain all morning. The city blocked off several blocks and both sides of Houston Street were filled with amazing works of art. The actual street was a free zone where anyone could draw whatever they wanted, but as the day went on all of the images started blending together into a big pastel swirl. Some of the artists got pretty creative with their work and even used pastels. Talk about expensive! I’ll just let the images speak for themselves.

Note: none of these images were edited, the chalk coloring really was that vivid!

I’m sad we didn’t get to see the finished result of this one, judging by the sketch it looked had some potential!

And those were just the ones we liked! There was no way to capture all of them with all of the crowds, but you get the idea. I was just so blown away at how different groups used the medium in their own way, very inspiring! And those portraits, holy moly! This was such a fun Saturday afternoon, and if you haven’t been I highly suggest bringing the whole family to check out some really cool work next year! Does your city have something like this?

We do Canstruction and a Gingerbread build-off through AIA Houston. Not sure if they do those in San Antonio or not but my students get to compete aganist Architecture frims from all over the city. It would be neat to see Houston do something like Chalk it up and have our art students get invovled.
