what i wore: singing the blues

dress {forever21}, shirt {gap}, sandals {tory burch}, cuff {tory burch}, ring {h&m}, necklace {charming charlies}

I’m a little sad because this is my favorite wall to shoot against for these posts, and it’s about to be repainted. What color? I have no idea. But I’m hoping it still pops against my outfits. Can I make that request mr. apartment owner sir? Also you may recognize this maxi “skirt” which is actually a dress, but with an oxford over it I can now carry it into fall. And a dress that takes me 90% through the year [no winters here folks!] is a-okay in my book. Also monochromatic palettes are totally in this fall, so I decided to get on that bandwagon real quick. You mean all of my clothes can be one color? Sa-weet. This should make picking out my clothes each night easy as pie!

I hope everyone has a lovely Labor Day weekend! My parents [and cherubs] are in town and my mom brought in two giant bins full of fluffed flowers that we will be assembling into centerpieces yay! What are your plans?

a tale of the cover hogs

We’re going to get a little personal today and talk about our bedroom. Derek and his dad built the beautiful bed we’re sleeping on and it’s somehow never graced the blog with it’s presence. Probably because A. our bedroom is way too small to really photograph, and B. because it’s not 100% finished yet. I’ve been pestering him to write a post about how they made it for months so hopefully that will come soon. Until then here are the only photos I have of it (taken at Derek’s former abode)

We haven’t decided if we want to paint it white or stain it the color of the coffee table he built me, but I do know one thing for sure. This baby is getting a button tufted headboard STAT! I already have the fabric purchased, I’ve just been waiting for a free weekend to tackle this project because as we learned with the last headboard, they take a while.

Before I get into the rest of the plans for the the bedroom I have to share a story. I had been sleeping horribly for the past few months so I assumed it was the harder mattress that I wasn’t used to. So we started thinking about getting a different mattress because I prefer something a little softer. After lots of shopping we quickly discovered that platform mattresses aren’t ever really very soft, and they’re extremely expensive. So we  put a pin in it. Fast forward to a couple weekends ago when Crystal-Fresh and I were perusing the outlets and found a huge pile of twin-sized duvet covers at Pottery Barn for how much? Five freaking dollars. What? I don’t even own a twin bed and I was stoked! I mean $5 is less than any fabric I’ve seen in my life, so I had big plans to make pillows, skirts, who cares? It was practically free. You may have caught a glimpse of it when Baby Bear made his debut earlier this week.

Pretty right? Since we haven’t really had a comforter on the bed (due to the fact that its blazing hot outside, and Derek has never been a fan of comforters.. is this a guy thing?) I had just planned on putting a cheapo Ikea down comforter in it and folding it at the end of the bed, which ended up looking really sharp against our white sheets. The first night it was on the bed I ended up grabbing it in the middle of the night to snuggle up with (I’ve always been a lover of down comforters regardless of the season). I had the best sleep of my life. The next day Derek even confessed how much he loved having a fluffy comforter and that I needed to get a king sized one so that we don’t fight over it. Which meant that 1. all of my dreams were coming true because I finally got to sleep with a comforter, and 2. it was time to shop for new bedding!

The twin duvet and comforter got exiled to the guest room (which was no sweat off my back since it was so inexpensive) and I was ready to buy the West Elm duvet cover we had on our wedding registry so that I could begin sleeping through the night again. (Yippee!) But sadly our dream duvet set had gone on sale and was sold out. Boo.

Just look at that edge detail. Yummy!

Derek wanted all white, but I thought that was a tad bit boring so this was the perfect compromise. He got his all white, and I got my preppy striped detail. Needless to say we were a little bummed that it was gone. But with the power of the internets I actually found it on ebay for a fraction of the price, in a king! The only issue was that it has been monogrammed with a cream ‘S’.

But the good news is that my current last name begins with an “S”, so it’s not THAT obscure like a “Q” or something. And the even better news is that the other side is completely blank. So by flipping the duvet over we saved $80. Bam! I also have a feeling that I can probably just rip out the embroidery with a seam ripper. Maybe not? I’ll find out tonight when it arrives! It ended up only being $50 (+free shipping) which for a king duvet from West Elm is unheard of. Luckily they still had the matching pillow shams for sale online so I snatched two of those up and they’re on their way to our apartment as we speak.

Now the only problem was that we didn’t have a king-sized down comforter, just the queen that was now on the guest bed. (That’s right, the guests get TWO down comforters because we love them that much!) So after researching the down comforters at my favorite stores I ended up choosing this Fieldcrest goose down comforter from Target. When I brought it home to make sure it looked right on our bed I noticed it was a little thin. It felt fluffy in the store but once I unfolded it from it’s bag it was super flat (like our Ikea one). And then I saw it. The tag sewn onto the comforter said “Target Home Collection” What?? And then the manufacturer’s tag said 75% duck down. Needless to say someone put the wrong comforter in the Fieldcrest bag, either at the factory or it had been returned. I was a little peeved because the Target version was only $60 and I paid a lot more for my Fieldcrest one, so back to the store I went. Which was totally awkward because it looked like I stole something or that I purposely swapped them out to get a bigger refund. I don’t know, but for some reason I felt really guilty.

After all was said and done I was able to exchange the comforters out and now I’m just waiting for the rest of the bedding to arrive. Here is a little plan we have going on for the rest of the bed and the wall behind it:

And no those aren’t the prints we’ll be using, I just chose them for the mock up, although I just love the bear one! The wall opposite the bed is navy blue with a floor to ceiling gallery wall in white frames, which we’ll be sharing with you on Monday! I don’t know why the bedroom is always the last room that feels “finished” to me. I guess it’s because no one sees it as much as they do the living room or dining room, but I just love how everything is coming along! What is your stance on comforters? Do you love them and your beau hates them or visa versa? We can’t be the only comforter battlers ;)

wedding wednesday: wedding party ladies

This past week has be 100% team invitations. We’ve had an assembly line going since Friday night to hand address, line envelopes, apply vintage stamps, stamp return addresses, wait patiently for the invitations to arrive, and now we’re about 1/3 of the way through with hand cutting out the shapes of each invitation (which is 5 pages long) so needless to say, we’ve been busy! I can’t share any real photos of what everything looks like until after they’re sent out (Saturday!!) so in a couple of weeks I’ll have a full post sharing our crazy hand crafted invitations. That we’re a little obsessed with.

Moving on! I’ve officially selected every element for what I want our wedding party to wear and sent all of that info to our lovely bridesmaids and groomsmen. So this week I wanted to  share what the ladies will be wearing. I mentioned here that we were able to score my inspiration dress for the bridesmaids from Kate Spade for such a deal! Now that the dress is chosen I’ve finally narrowed down the overall look for the day. I’m obsessed with color (I mean.. it’s kind of my life) so I wanted to incorporate each of my six colors in the girls’ looks. Since they’d be wearing such a classic black dress I assigned a color to each girl for them to wear in the form of tights. I know this may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it will be such a cute way to keep the girls warm in December while still looking fresh and modern.

THE DRESS: Kate Spade June dress [discontinued]

THE SHOES: I told the girls to choose any black shoe with some sort of bow, pouf, or sparkle like any of these.

THE ACCESSORIES: Each girl will be wearing their hair in a teased back pony with a bow headband. And any form of black and gold statement necklace.

THE TIGHTS: The bridesmaids will be wearing light pink, dark pink, orange, and yellow.

THE DRESS: Kate Spade June dress [discontinued]

THE SHOES: For the MOH I wanted her to wear any black shoe with some sort of gold embellishment like these.

THE ACCESSORIES: The MOH will also be wearing her hair in a teased back pony with a bow headband. And to set her apart from the other girls I’ve asked her to wear a gold statement necklace. Because she’s fancy!

THE TIGHTS: The MOH will be wearing kelly green tights because it is my favorite color.

THE DRESS: I originally found this dress on OLHN in yellow, and quickly scoured the internets to find someone who could make one for me (because they were all sold out.. and a zillion dollars) I found this fabulous lady who will be making one for our flower girl in blue.

THE SHOES: For the flower girl I chose glittery black flats so that she would be comfortable all day.

THE ACCESSORIES: The flower girl will also be wearing a bow headband, but I can’t decide if her hair should be up or down because she has the prettiest long curls.

THE TIGHTS: Her tights will be white with black polkadots like these.

And there you have it! After some quick photoshopping this is what everyone will look like together:

Next week I’ll be sharing what our groomsmen will be wearing. They’ll be looking dapper for sure!

7 things you may not know..

I was so excited this weekend when I received an email from the lovely Shayla of Designing a Life awarding us the Versatile Blogger Award! Thank you Shayla for the sweet words you said about our blog:

I love the clean, colorful modern design of Derek & Catharine’s blog, but even more I love that is authored by a couple. Most blogs I come across are authored by one person (usually a woman) so it’s always refreshing to get a male perspective; and I think it’s just so adorable that this couple does this blog together.

I was so flattered to be listed with some other great bloggers while also learning more about Shayla, who’s blog I’ve been reading for as long as I can remember. As part of accepting this award I am asked to write 7 Things You Might Not Know About Me and mention 15 Blogs that I enjoy, so here we go!

ONE | I WEIGHED 10 LBS 7 OZ WHEN I WAS BORN

That’s right. You may not believe this looking at my frame now, but indeed I was a very large baby. I was so large, that people swore my mom was carrying twins. Don’t worry though, my mom had a C-section so we’re still friends. Also, all of those newborn clothes you get at baby showers? I couldn’t wear them. I could only fit into 6mos clothing. And that little knitted beanie they give you in the hospital that’s pink if you’re a girl? Mine sat right on top of my head like a beret.

Yes that IS a full head of hair.

TWO | DEREK AND I ARE BOTH ONLY CHILDREN

You may have noticed that neither of us ever mention our siblings or neices/nephews. That’s because we don’t have any. I will never be a sister or an aunt. Our children won’t have any aunts or uncles or cousins. Isn’t that weird? I find it very sad because I was always so close to my cousins growing up. But we’ve both decided to treat our friends as family and their children as our kids’ cousins. We’ve also decided that (God willing) we will have more than one child because neither of us liked being an only very much. It was fun as a kid, and we both like getting full attention from our parents, but as we get older once our parents are gone that’s it. We won’t have anyone in our immediate family left. So we’re always very intentional when we share stories about our childhoods so that our memories will live on even after our parents are gone.

This is my favorite photo of my family. 1. because we all look so happy and 2. because those glasses are back in style. Ask any hipster.

My cousins and I at 4, 6, and 8 (I’m the oldest)

Us again at 17, 19, and 21

THREE | I’M SEVERELY ALLERGIC TO METAL

My parents found this out at a young age when what they thought was ring worm, was actually a reaction to the snaps on my onesies. This progressed as I got older when I had to sit in those desks in school where the chair is connected to the desk by a metal bar, and I’d have a rash all down my arm. I quickly learned that I could only wear jewelry that was of silver grade or higher. But even sometimes if it’s hot out I can still react poorly. I can’t have any medicines that have metal in them, I have to use aluminum-free deodorant, and I used to wear a bandaid on my stomach to prevent my belt buckles from touching my skin. Yay for skinny belts being in style now!

If I wear this necklace for more than an hour, I’m about ready to rip it off of me. No lie.

FOUR | I USED TO WANT TO BE A SURGEON

And no, this has nothing to do with Grey’s Anatomy. I wanted to be a Surgeon back in middle school, and when we had to fill out our 4-year plans (schedules for high school) I was all signed up for lots of sciences and clinical rotation to get me on the right track to med school. I also took some art classes though and from then on I was done with being a doctor and obsessed with anything creative. I guess I always knew I wanted to do something with my hands, I just replaced a scalpel with an xacto. I continued taking art all through high school and immediately knew my passion was for Interior Design which caused me to declare my major before even starting college. When you know, you know!

My final portfolio senior year of college.

FIVE | I CAN NAME EVERY SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRY AND IT’S CAPITAL FROM NORTH TO SOUTH

This is just a random party trick of mine that I picked up in 8th grade Spanish class. We were taught a song to learn them all in order and that song has stuck with me ever since. Along with the Quadratic Equation.. which I never use.

Mexico D.F., Mexico – Guatemala, Guatemala – San Salvador, El Salvador – Tegucigalpa, Honduras – Managua, Nicaragua – San Jose, Costa Rica – Panama City, Panama – Caracas, Venezuela – Bogota, Columbia – Quito, Equador – Lima, Peru – La Pas, Bolivia – Asuncion, Paraguay – Santiago, Chile – Buenos Aires, Argentina – Montevideo, Uruguay [cue drum solo]

SIX | MY DAD HAD CANCER

Okay so this isn’t really about me, but it definitely affected me. Back in 2006 my dad was diagnosed with stage 3 squamous cell carcinoma (which is fancy for a tumor on the base of your tongue/lymph nodes). That summer was spent driving my dad to his Chemo and Radiation treatments every afternoon, watching my mom feed him through a tube in his stomach, watching his hair fall out and his body deteriorate, and watching my family slowly lose all of our strength. Luckily though he beat it and has been in remission for almost 6 years. It’s not something I usually talk about, in fact that whole year was a total blur to me, but if you want to learn more about his story go here.

This is what he normally looks like.

This was after his last day of radiation. He’s holding the cage he had to lay under that they screwed to the table everyday for his 8 weeks of radiation treatments.

SEVEN | I STILL SLEEP WITH A STUFFED ANIMAL

His name is Baby Bear, and Derek bought him for me on our first Valentine’s Day date to the Houston zoo. He’s very teeny and perfect to snuggle with. We’ve taken him on all of our road trips. I don’t know what it is about sleeping, but I’ve always had to have my arm around something and stuffed animals have always done the trick. Don’t judge me!
