reader diy: freshening up your curb appeal

Do you guys remember when we had this reader question from Sarah who needed help choosing colors to freshen up the exterior of her home? Well guess what? She totally took my advice and over the holidays painted her house! Check it out..

I mean, it’s like night and day! It’s amazing what a few coats of paint can do to give your home a whole new look. Here is what Sarah said:

Hey Catharine,

Well they guys finished the house and we LOVE it!!!  We made a few changes.  1) Our painter was using Sherwin Williams paint and since we didn’t have a Benjamin Moore store anywhere near us I had to match the house and trim color to the ones you selected.  Sooooooooo I took a picture with my iPhone of the Benjamin Moore colors and color matched them on my Sherwin Williams app.  2) We decided to go for black instead of navy (even though I have always wanted a navy front door) because our neighbors trim is navy and I felt like we would be competing.  Plus I love black and I think it makes everything look really sharp.  It looks like a totally different house!!!

Thank you so much for your help!!
Sarah

It really does look like a completely different house Sarah, and I’m so glad that you guys are happy with it! Now let’s compare my ghetto rendering and the newly painted house:

Looks pretty spot on right? ;) I still can’t get over how much of a transformation this was. Thanks again Sarah for sharing!

reader question: ohh baby baby

I received a question from one of my dear friends Sophie who wanted some help with the newest room in her house.. the baby’s room! Here is what she wrote:

Hey! So, I want your opinion on what color curtains I should get for the baby room. One of the walls has 2 windows which brings quite a bit of daylight into the tiny room. That’s a good thing, but I want to be able to block the light if needed.

Ok, the bedding is gray (like the color on the walls), dark gray, aqua, yellow (like the color on the walls), and white. I’m thinking of bringing in a pop of the aqua in by using a carpet tile rug, compliments of Interface. I’m leaning more towards using dark gray/charcoal colored curtains or white. I also want to put 96” curtains up in the closet because they used to have the old heavy metal sliding doors that never worked so we threw them away. I was thinking of using white for that…What do you think?? What colors would you recommend? These are the curtains I’m registered for that match the bedding:

but if I don’t get them I don’t want to buy them because I can find something cheaper. Plus, they might be a little too busy for me…

Okay first of all.. I love your colors! That sounds totally awesome. Honestly you can never go wrong with white for the windows, but I’d pick a nice thick linen because when you want light it glows, and when you want it dark they’re very good at blocking light. You can always sew a blackout liner to the backs of them if you really want to eliminate light, but then they’ll still be pretty on the front..[considering a lot of blackout panels aren't very attractive] I just love how my white linen drapery panels pop against my grey dining room wall:

They were from Target and super cheap. I think they were about $20 for both panels, and they’re bright enough to glow in the light, yet thick enough to block it out when I close them.

For the closet though, I’d have a little more fun and use the patterned panels that go with the bedding, or if that still feels a little to busy to you, maybe try a nice wide horizontal stripe of like grey/white or aqua/white? [You know I'll make you some!] I think that the closet can be more fun since there is only one closet and two windows, and having the pattern on the windows would probably be a little too much. I think that the closet could be a cool opportunity to add some visual interest without going overboard. I guess what I’m saying is to treat it like a giant closet-sized piece of art. Here are some of my favorite rooms that have added a fun pattern for their closet curtain..

Another perk to having them be a fun pattern is that they’ll hide dirt much easier considering you’ll probably be handling them a lot. These are just suggestions though, and I’m sure whatever you decide will look amazing. I can’t wait to see how the whole room turns out!

Okay so I realize that I haven’t been posting many projects lately, but that’s only because I’ve been crafting like a crazy person! This is my first official wedding project and it has literally taken me weeks to finish, but I’m almost done! I promise I have a ton of projects to post once they all get wrapped up, so until then.. can anyone figure out what I’m crafting? Don’t worry, you’ll never figure it out. And yes. there will be ceramic animals.

what i wore: friday night lights

shirt {nordstrom}, pants {nordstrom rack}, blazer {forever 21}, shoes {kelly & katie}, necklace {stella & dot}

So I have a small confession [and he will deny it up and down but..] Derek and I are utterly addicted to Friday Night Lights. I was skeptical at first because I assumed it was like the movie, which I wasn’t that into. But this show. Holy Tim Riggins it’s awesome. There’s something about each character that sucks you in and forces you to sit for 6 hours at a time and  watch every stinking episode.

If I went to Dillon High School, I’d wear these pants every Friday. Go Panthers! Honestly, I’m just waiting for Derek to finish editing these photos so that we can watch another episode. It’s a sickness I tell you. If you haven’t started watching yet, DON’T! Unless you have a good couple of weeks to waste. You’ve been warned.

Clear eyes full hearts,

wedding wednesday: meet our photographer!

As I mentioned earlier, last weekend we had our engagement photo shoot! Our photographer is in Houston so we hung out with Derek’s family all weekend and had our shoot on Saturday. Let me just say that it was SUCH a blast! I don’t know if this is a common side effect, but Derek and I feel even closer than ever after 400 cuddles, and kisses, and giggles. I guess that makes perfect sense, now that I think about it. Can I just say that “modeling” its totally exhausting? We both woke up the next morning sore and aching. Maybe we should work out more..

Anyway, I felt that this would be the perfect time to introduce you to our wonderfully talented and totally hilarious photographer and newest blog sponsor!

Meet Lynsey..

You may recognize her from here.

See that shirt? That only means one thing. Lynsey is a fellow Red Raider! And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Lynsey and I met in college and we were also in the the same sorority. She’s an extremely talented photographer and graphic designer and owner of Lynsey Creative. She has a fresh and modern style which is why we love her so much! See for yourself..

Isn’t she awesome? I mean what can’t this girl do? You should totally check out her fab etsy shop, and follow her on facebook, twitter, and pinterest. Then you can be as obsessed as we are!

After seeing her skills behind a camera all afternoon Saturday, I know that we chose the perfect person to capture our big day. I can’t wait to see the rest of the images from our engagement sesh. And don’t worry, they’ll be up on the blog as soon as I can get my grubby paws on them.

**edit**
Lynsey has put some of her favorite shots from the day on her blog. Go check them out!! We are SO excited to see the rest :)
