10 things: jessica whitaker can’t live without

We’re continuing with our series featuring some of the creative people that we know. Every Tuesday we will introduce them as they share with us the ten things they can’t live without. Today we are introducing our dear friend and fashionista, fellow Kate Spade-aholic, and blogger of lieu de jaune Jessica Whitaker [@jessicawells95]

Location: Seattle, WA

[one] god

My Savior. My hope. My future. My strength. God has blessed me immensely this past year and I am forever grateful. Everything I do is for Him since He’s given everything for me.

[two] friends & family

God has blessed me with a group of very supportive friends and an awesome, creative family.

[three] my camera

Photography is one of my biggest sources of inspiration! Pictures can scream what would be considered offensive for a person to say. Pictures tell a story, leaving the photographer to write it.

[four] my blackberry

This puppy pretty much holds my life: my schedule, contacts, messages, e-mails, and photos…it’s all incased inside the cute purple shell! Can your iPhone do that? Probably.

[five] java

That’s gangsta slang for coffee. I have a 5am wakeup call, so coffee is pretty much mandatory to start off my day.

[six] wayfarer sunglasses

Not to brag or anything but MAN! I look pretty snazzy in a pair of wayfarers. Not only are they from one of my favorite decades, but they can be super inexpensive! Which is awesome considering I’m a poor human. I buy mine from places like Target and Charlotte Russe, forced to only dream about owning a legitimate Ray Bans.

[seven] PCA skin purifying mask

When it comes to skin care, I only settle for 100% natural, organic potions. And oh my word, this baby is so natural you could eat it! [But don’t. Because that’s gross. Unless of course you’re into that sort of thing…. ] Whenever I get a pimple I apply the mask for two nights in a row and bam! The little devil is gone the next morning. It’s a little pricy, but if you’re going to splurge anywhere on your beauty budget it should be on your skin.

[eight] c.o. bigelow rose salve

Apply it to dry hands, elbows, face, and lips! It’s not sticky or greasy and the subtle rose notes are refreshing and light.

[nine] scarves

I think we can all agree on this one; scarves are one of the most versatile accessories out there! They can make or break an outfit and are totally ageless. What I love about them is that they’re a great way to be on-trend without looking like a fashion victim. Scarves are the perfect opportunity for playing around with color, texture, and pattern and can add instant interest to any ensemble.

[ten] denim

There’s nothing quite like owning a good pair of well made jeans.

Stay tuned for text Tuesday when we feature our dear friend and thrifting extraordinaire, lover of interior design, master of color and pattern, and blogger of Nuestra Vida Dulce Joi Svezia. [@joidan82]

Until next time!

dc:finds | buy a pair, give a pair

For some of you this may be old news, but thanks to our dear friend Rachel, we’ve been loving us some Warby Parker for a while now. Who??? Warby Parker. Get with it. Just kidding. Warby Parker sells ah-mazing glasses for only $95 a pair including your prescription! Crazy talk, we know.

They have a HUGE selection of styles and colors for any face shape and personality. Both being glasses-wearers ourselves, we always have trouble finding the perfect glasses that really express who we are. And without vision insurance frames can be $300+ so for people like us Catharine who get tired of the same old frames every year, Warby Parker is a very affordable option to give yourself a new look every now and then.

Yeah yeah, ordering glasses online seems weird, but not at WP. You can choose up to 5 pairs at a time to test out at home and then send them back once you decide, and the shipping is free!

They also have an option to virtually try on any glasses you fancy by uploading a photo of yourself or using your webcam. We’ve already spent way too many hours playing with our virtual glasses.

So what could be even better than vintage looking glasses for über cheap? The fact that whenever you buy a pair, Warby Parker will give a pair to someone who doesn’t have access to glasses. Kind of like Tom’s shoes, but they help people see! It really warms our hearts to know that there are businesses out there like WP and Toms that are so focused on the greater good.

One billion people in the world don’t have access to glasses, and so far Warby Parker has been able to provide 50,000 pairs to people all over the world. So even if you don’t need corrective lenses you can still help out by getting some fakies, that way someone across the globe gets a pair of glasses, and you get to become a member of the four-eyes gang. It’s a win win!

We’re going to order 5 pairs for Derek to try out, so we’ll let you guys know how it all goes! Now comes the hard part, which ones to choose.. Have any of you bought glasses from Warby Parker? Did you just love them?

awkward and awesome thursday

We’re continuing with our series called Awesome & Awkward Thursday inspired by our friend Sydney over at The Daybook. We weren’t planning on doing this every week, but we’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback from you guys so the series continues!

tank {h&m}, blazer {h&m}, shorts {express}, shoes {candies}, earrings {kate spade}, necklace {kate spade}, ring {kate spade}, sunnies {kiosk}

  • The lady in front of us on the plane who kept trying to leave once we had landed, while still being seatbelted in. It took her about five attempts before she figured out why she couldn’t leave her seat. All the while I had to pee, and I literally flew past her to get off the plane and sprint to the restroom. I don’t like peeing in the air.. Too much? I said it was awkward.
  • Being greeted at baggage claim by my dad, who had to say bye to all of his BFFs he had made while waiting for us. He knew all of their life stories and everything. “Dad! …..Who ARE these people??”
  • People who take up the whole aisle with their shopping cart turned sideways, whilst being on the phone. If you’re shopping, why are you on the phone? I’m sure the person on the other end doesn’t care how many candles you’re buying.
  • The couple in front of us at the movies were wearing silver glitter toms and red chucks. It was like looking in the mirror.
  • The ‘handshake hug’. Are we going to hug? Are we going to shake hands? Throw me a bone here because I hate this sitch more than anything.

  • The bum who stood on the corner in front of Yolk everyday who spoke like a pirate/leprechaun. He was seriously my favorite. “Top of the mornin’ to ya me ladies! Yarrrrrr!”
  • Coming home from a much needed fantastic trip to Chicago, to lots of birthday surprises from The Boy :)
  • $3 tanks from H&M! Seriously, why doesn’t Texas have one yet? We love bargains just as much as anyone!
  • My dad got an iPhone! We’re officially an iPhone family now :)
  • Bridesmaids. Seriously if you haven’t seen it, GO! I haven’t laughed that hard at a movie in a long time.
  • This weekend’s plans: laying out, being lazy, completely rearranging my living room, no big deal.
  • My BFF got her Masters in Environmental Design, because she’s a baller.

What are some awkward/awesome things that have happened to you this week? Embracing the awkward makes you awesome!
