SPOTTED: ceramic animals on the loose!

Animals have always played a huge roll in home decor. Whether it be your claw foot tub, your horse head bookends, or your gryphon pedestal table, they’re everywhere.

Even though I’m a huge animal lover, you’d never catch me dead with kitten posters or froggy figurines. I try to incorporate my love of animals in a more subtle way and with a bit of whimsy. Enter: my love of ceramic animals. They’re starting to spring up in home decor all over the place.

So since we’re all friends here, and this is a safe place, I wanted to share with you my disgusting addiction to ceramic animals and faux animals in general.

That’s right, another rhino.. I just can’t get enough! This butter dish was such a steal at Pier1. He was originally $15 and when I got to the register he rang up for $3! These bird salt and pepper shakers were also a Pier1 find over a year ago. I love how that add some fun to my dining room tablescape.

These two were both impulse buys at Home Goods. The dragon makes a really quirky bookend, and you may even remember seeing him in my old apartment. The Greyhound guard dog is a new addition to the ceramic animal kingdom. You may remember him making an appearance in our Christmas tree crashing post, sporting a festive bow around his neck.

There are even ceramic animals in the kitchen. The fish dip caddy was another great Pier1 steal. It was also marked down to $3. My little cow creamer was a fun find in Traverse City, MI a few summers ago. I’ve probably used him for actual creamer twice, I just think he looks fun on top of my stove.

Please tell me I’m not the only one out there obsessed with ceramic animals! Derek thinks it’s the most ridiculous thing ever. Maybe we can form a support group?

reader DIY: faux west elm lamp

We get a lot of fun reader projects sent to us, so we wanted to start sharing how awesomely talented our lovely readers are!

Today we wanted to share with you an amazing lamp by one of our 10 things-ters Raul. He was inspired by this West Elm beauty that we’ve been drooling over for months.

I bought an old victorian looking shade from a thrift store because it already had an internal frame with vertical rods.  I ripped off the nasty material and cleaned it off, then bent the curved rods into a veritcal position.  I then bought antique bronze spray paint and painted the frame. I bought the wood venner at Alamo Hardwoods, cut it into strips (I decided to go with an alternating pattern of ABAB), and lightly stained them.  I then wove them in and used wood glue and small office binder clips to hold the two ends together while they dried.  The hardest part was cutting the stips evenly.

Initially I was thinking of building the frame myself, and then while thrift store shopping in Kerville, I saw the old shade and it came to me. So this is the lamp that I ended up making. It turned out different than the inspiration piece from West Elm but I think I did ok.  What do you think?

If you have any cool DIY projects you’d like to share with us, we’d love to see them and who knows? They may end up on our blog!

10 things: joaquin abrego can’t live without

We’re continuing with our series featuring some of the creative people that we know. Every Tuesday we will introduce them as they share with us the ten things they can’t live without. Today we are introducing our dear friend and interior designer, furniture flipper, DIYer, and licensed masseuse, Joaquin Abrego.

Location: San Antonio, TX

[one] fri-mily

This is the obvious friends and family. There is no separation between the two as my friends have become my family. They are my sisters ***cue the 1970’s sister sledge hit song we are family*** Nothing matters more to me than my few friends and small but tight knit family.  AND like a cliché gay, my mother is my best friend, #1 fan and biggest supporter. My fri-MLY keeps me safe, sane, grounded, happy, loved and in check.

[two] integrity

There’s nothing I like less than a liar, a cheat, a fake or a pretender. The hardest thing to hold on to is integrity. So often people lie, cheat and manipulate to get ahead. When it comes to integrity I’m a little old school and believe your word should mean something.  Your hand shake and word should be synonymous with trust, honesty and loyalty. If you say it, mean it and do it. Otherwise, don’t say it and if you’re wrong own it.

[three] sense of humor & sarcasm

If you can’t laugh at yourself, get outta my face. I LOVE dry humor and love people who can make a joke. My favorite people are those who are witty, quick and can banter without skipping a beat. Oh by the way, I’m horrible at telling jokes, witty YES, joke teller HELL NO. I never remember the joke just the punch line. If you can make me laugh you’re alright in my book.

[four] spray paint

I love spray paint. It allows me to custom any item I want and since I am an avid thrift store shopper, spray paint is my BFF FOR SURE. It gives me the ability to give furniture new life and a new look. It hides imperfections and is low cost and easy to use. Sadly, it is BAD for the environment and I TRY hard not to use it but it’s an addiction I can’t seem to break.

[five] guilty pleasures

What can I say except… I LOVE Rupauls Drag race, Britney Spears and 95% of Bravos reality shows. They make me laugh, dance, sing, gossip, act a fool and even throw glitter in the air as I spin. GAY! I know but that’s why it’s a guilty pleasure. The shows are fluff and none take themselves too seriously; it’s mindless entertainment that I welcome every now and again.

[six] massages

Massages are one of the BEST things EVER. They make a bad day/ week or month fade away. They are so relaxing and good for your body. They keep you young, sane and very relaxed.

[seven] imagination & dreams

I don’t know what age it is but many people lose their imagination, forget their dreams and become so boring and jaded. Dreams and imagination got us to the moon and they continue to move us forward.

[eight] credit card

If there is one thing I never leave home without it’s my CC. The ease of charging allows me to get in and out of places without a problem. It also keeps my wallet from losing its shape and being too heavy.

[nine] sunglasses & bags

Another thing I never leave home without is a pair of sunglasses. I find it very important to have a range of accessories to enhance your look. Bags (or in my case “my purse”) are not only cool but functional as well.

[ten] challenges

Personal or public, I believe challenges help build our character. I don’t believe it’s the challenge itself but how we confront, deal and process that builds character. Whether it’s a design competition or statement of ignorance, challenges have made me stronger, smarter, more flexible, witty and all around FIERCE.

Stay tuned for text Tuesday when we feature our dear friend and designer, fashionista, movie trivia buff, cupcake baker, vintage clothing connoisseur, and videographer Arlene Meyer.

Until next time!
