dc:finds | flip & tumble

This week’s Friday Finds is SO good that it get’s it’s very own post! Okay so remember last month when we were drooling over reusable bags? Well after doing all of that extensive research for our lovely readers, we decided that flip & tumble bags were the way to go! Between the two of use we bought 7 of the 24/7 bags in pink, purple, green, grey, red, green, blue, and yellow. They are 100% awesome! They start out as little 3″ balls that unwrap into large one strap bags that hold 25lbs each!

What we love about them:

  • They’re durable
  • They’re washable
  • They hold a lot. As in one can hold 3 gallons of milk!
  • They fold up into 3″ balls that you can just throw in your purse or the trunk of your car so you never forget them
  • They’re much more stylish than the average reusable bag and they’re logo free
  • They’re really fun to fold back up!
  • They’re super inexpensive, only $7 a pop!
  • Most importantly they cut down on plastic bags by 100% if you remember to use them

We also each bought a set of the reusable produce bags. Which we just love, and get lot’s of compliments on.

What we love about them:

  • They’re color coded, you can even match your fruit/veggie colors to the bag’s tags [if you're OCD like Catharine]
  • They’re washable
  • They’re mesh, so you [and the checker] can see which produce you bought
  • You get 5 for only $11
  • You cut down on all those produce bags that you can’t reuse as trash bags.. I mean what do you do with those things? Oh yeah. toss ‘em :/

Don’t worry if you’re looking for 2 straps, smaller bags, lunch bags, etc. They have TONS of different options. Here are some other items they have to offer:

[1] 24/7 prints – $12 [2] 24/7 mini – $7 [3] shopper bag – $5 [4] carry pouches – small: $3 large: $4
But wait, that’s not all! If you haven’t already noticed, on our sidebar we now have our first sponsor: flip & tumble! We’re very excited to be working with them on an upcoming post that will benefit one of you lovely readers out there. Wait.. what? I guess you’ll have to wait and see!!
Disclaimer: None of the makers of the items mentioned above have perked us in any way to plug their products, they really are our favorite products that we’ve come across lately.

365 days later

Well as you can guess, today marks our 1 year anniversary of dating. Although we’ve spent most of this past year 3 hours apart and traveling between San Antonio and Houston every weekend to see each other, it’s been well worth it. Some people are skeptical of long distance relationships, but when you’ve found the right person, distance isn’t really an obstacle. We’ve put together a little video of the last 365 days. It’s super cheesy and more for each other than anyone else, but we hope you enjoy :)

Until next time!

some things just look better in the dark

Considering it’s the week of Halloween, we decided it was time to carve us some pumpkins! We headed to HEB and picked the roundest pumpkins with the biggest stems [for easy opening]

As you can see, the pumpkin and Catharine are really bonding on her ideas. After finally settling on each of our design concepts, we each went to work. We started off by gutting our beloved pumkins, which is when we realized it had been years for the both of us since we had last carved pumpkins, and we didn’t remember it being so much work!

Once our pumpkins were nice and clean on the inside, we started sketching our patterns out. We ended up scoring around our sketches with a knife which made the carving a whole lot easier.

After a little blood, sweat, and tears we finally had our finished pumpkins. Derek went with a crazy ghoulish Nightmare Before Christmas-esque face, while Catharine stuck with our clean dc logo. Because the dc concept had some floating parts [the inside of the "d" and the space between the letters] we ended up stabbing in some paper clips for support, which worked a lot better than we thought!

We teamed up with Derek’s roommate Chris who had carved an Eames molded plywood chair a few nights ago.

We thought they turned out pretty great, but then we took them outside and as we said: some things just look better in the dark! :)

Do you have any cool jack-o-lanterns you’d like to share with us? We love seeing the lengths people go to when it comes to the art of pumpkin carving!

Until next time!

10 things: keaton branch can’t live without

We’re continuing with our series featuring some of the creative people that we know. Every Tuesday we will introduce them as they share with us the ten things they can’t live without. Today we are introducing our dear friend and musician, fellow blog writer [AudioADD], Apple geek, hamburger enthusiast Keaton Branch [@kbranch]

Location: Houston, TX

[one] coffee

Quitting smoking recently left me itching for a new drug, and I’ve found that coffee fills that void fairly well. I have every intention of following in the steps of my grandparents by guzzling a full pot before starting each day.

[two] concerts

Musicians are in their prime when they’re on stage. Some of my favorite albums didn’t mean much to me until I was in the same room hearing the songs live and sharing those emotions with the people who created them. Concerts are invigorating, cathartic, and often surreal.

[three] grilling

Some men work with wood and metal to create something that they’re proud of. I use a grill. Give me a basket of veggies, a pile of meat, and some charcoal, and say goodbye to your respect for anyone else’s grilling skills.

[four] happy music

Remember that part in Fight Club where the main character is having his hand burned with lye and he goes to his happy place to find his “power animal”? Music is my power animal. When I need to calm down or forget about a stressful day, I put on some Polyphonic Spree or some James Taylor and it all melts away.

[five] headphones

I have a bit of a sweet tooth for headphones. It’s pretty rare that you’ll find me without a set of headphones within arms-reach. If I want to hear music I want to experience it, and you simply can’t do that without a good set of cans.

[six] ipad

Mobile technology has always been fascinating to me, and the iPhone has revolutionized the way I approach my day-to-day. With the advent of the iPad, the interface that I’ve learned to know, love, and be productive with is now so much more immersive.

[seven] passion

Everything I choose to do in my life I choose out of passion: blogging, music, relationships, work, etc. Life is too short and too full for anything that you’re not passionate about.

[eight] style

It’s no secret, and I’m not ashamed. I am an admirer of style and I put effort into it. One of my favorite books is “The Modern Gentleman: A Guide to Essential Manners, Savvy, and Vice.” I want to exemplify the modern gentleman, and I do my best to show it through the way I dress, speak, and carry myself.

[nine] vinyl

There’s something nostalgic about dropping a needle down between the grooves on a fresh record. The warm crackle of dust in the analog sound is the subtle imperfection that is too often polished out of albums these days.

[ten] writing

I was 10 when I attended my first poetry reading with my mom. I was 13 when I wrote my first song, and 14 when I started my first blog. Writing has always been an outlet for me. It’s my soapbox, my language study, and my creative outlet.

Stay tuned for text Tuesday when we feature our dear friend and designer, photographer/owner of Chippora Photography, Alicia Spaete.

Until next time!

the boy turns 25!!

I know that Derek’s birthday recap is a few weeks late, but it IS still his birth month, so better late than never! So we kicked off the big 2-5 by heading to Beethoven’s after work on Friday [don't worry Derek had the day off because that's what we do on our birthdays!] That night was Oktoberfest so there was lots of polka, brats, and of course beer! Derek’s parents came for the weekend, and his mom baked him a chocolate rum cake that we brought, and his roommate Chris baked him a vegan chocolate espresso cake. How about that faux iPhone flame? Pretty legit eh?

Saturday, we woke up super early and grabbed some coffee at Olmos Perk, and then headed down to the Farmer’s Market at Pearl Brewery. We actually lucked out because it was also the grand opening of the new Culinary Institute so there was lots of tasty food to try!

The rest of the weekend was pretty relaxing, just spending time with the Klepac clan and celebrating the fact that Derek is a quarter of a century old! :)

Happy Birth Month!
